We want to expand the community of Bishopton and create a development that benefits the wider area. The new development will occupy around a quarter of the former Royal Ordnance site. Construction is likely to take place over a 15 year period.
There will be different types of housing to benefit families and the elderly and commercial developments will help create new jobs. The development will also include a range of new facilities for the community such as a primary school, a community centre, a library and a health centre. There will also be plenty of open spaces for formal and informal recreation.
Renfrewshire Council gave us outline planning permission for the development in December 2009. This gave us a guide to the different uses and activities that should be created across the site – but it was only the starting point.
Early stages of development
Development will take place in a number of phases. The early phases will be in a band running along the eastern edge of the site and include both north-eastern and south-eastern corners.
A number of developers will be involved in these early phases. We are working on a Design Code which will give developers instructions and guidance as to the general appearance and technical aspects of new buildings and landscape. The Design Code will ensure everyone is working the same way.
We expect the early phases of the Design Code to be ready by Summer 2011.
Whilst we work on the Design Code we are also developing the engineering design for the infrastructure to serve the first parts of the development. This includes new access roads leading from the A8 to the north and south of Bishopton, a new drainage system and the utilities required by modern developments.
We will submit the Design Code and engineering details for parts of the infrastructure to Renfrewshire Council for consideration. The Council will notify neighbours that we have submitted this information and give them the opportunity to make comments.
Developers will submit details of their individual projects to the Council, following consideration of the Design Code.
